Gyeonggi Province Launches Innovative Program to Support ‘Imperfect’ Produce Sales

Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, is pioneering a new initiative to bolster farmer incomes and reduce food waste by actively supporting the distribution of “waste agricultural products” – produce that doesn’t meet conventional grade standards due to cosmetic imperfections or minor damage, but remains perfectly safe for consumption. This program, the first of its kind in the nation, aims to address the economic challenges faced by farmers and promote sustainable practices.

Addressing Food Waste and Farmer Income

Traditionally classified as ‘ugly produce,’ these agricultural products often face challenges in reaching consumers, leading to economic losses for farmers. The Gyeonggi Province initiative, formalized through the ‘Gyeonggi-do Ordinance on Supporting the Distribution of Wasted Agricultural Products’ enacted on January 15th, seeks to rectify this issue by creating dedicated sales channels for these items. The ordinance is designed to solve problems such as low income of farmers and waste of resources.

Financial Support for Distribution Companies

The province will provide purchase subsidies totaling 100 million won each to distribution companies that commit to purchasing these agricultural products. A demand survey will be conducted across cities and counties within Gyeonggi Province until April to identify potential project participants. Subsidies are slated to be issued in May and June.

A Two-Tiered Approach to Utilization

The program envisions a two-pronged approach to utilizing these products. High-quality “waste” produce will be directly sold to consumers, while items with more significant imperfections will be channeled to food ingredient distributors for processing into food products. This ensures that all usable produce finds a market, minimizing waste.

Ensuring Consumer Confidence Through Safety Testing

To guarantee consumer safety, all agricultural products distributed through this program will undergo rigorous safety testing before reaching the market. This commitment to quality control aims to build trust and encourage consumer acceptance of these previously overlooked products.

Comprehensive Data Collection and Future Planning

Starting in May, Gyeonggi Province will conduct a comprehensive fact-finding survey to assess the volume, types, and distribution patterns of “waste agricultural products” generated within the province. The data collected will inform the development of a ‘Gyeonggi-do waste agricultural product distribution revitalization plan,’ outlining long-term strategies for sustainable growth.

A Climate-Resilient Agricultural Policy

According to an official from Gyeonggi Province, this distribution support project is a key component of the province’s broader agricultural policy, focused on building a more resilient and crisis-resistant agricultural structure. The province encourages active participation from cities, counties, and distribution companies to maximize the program’s impact on local farmers.
