Updates from Halo Waypoint address community lore questions regarding the canon status of Halo: CE, the presence of Flood tank forms, and early energy shield testing on Mjolnir Mark IV armor. The publication clarifies how contradictions between the 25th-anniversary remake and earlier media are resolved within the core canon.

Canon Precedence and Campaign Evolved

When discrepancies arise across Halo’s various retellings—such as the original 2001 game, the 2003 novelization, the 2011 remaster, and Fireteam Raven—the source that makes the most holistic sense takes precedence. For instance, where Campaign Evolved altered how the Master Chief overloads Alpha Halo’s pulse generators compared to the original mission Two Betrayals, the original game retains canonical precedence. Similarly, the Longsword model is canonically regarded as the original C709 to align with Halo: First Strike, rather than the C708 depicted in Campaign Evolved. Meanwhile, new elements—such as Captain Jacob Keyes asking the Master Chief to give his unique service pistol to his daughter Miranda—are treated as additive to existing lore rather than replacements.

Flood Specimen Containment on Installations

Addressing questions about the appearance of Flood tank forms on Alpha Halo before a Gravemind has formed, the update confirms that a variety of Flood specimens, including pure forms, are contained on Forerunner installations. Tank forms were previously seen held in stasis pods on the Halo 3 map Cold Storage on Delta Halo. Once containment was broken, these pre-existing pure forms escaped, leading to encounters with both Tank forms and Juggernauts by the ODST squad in Halo: Fireteam Raven.

Mjolnir Mark IV Energy Shield Testing

Although fully integrated energy shields were a breakthrough specific to the Mjolnir Mark V, experimental prototype shield modules were field-tested on the Mark IV platform as early as 2531. This is supported by Halo Wars, where Red Team Spartans possessed energy shielding, as well as Halo: The Essential Visual Guide (2011). Additional corroboration comes from the Halo: Reach armory description of the Mark IV Grenadier variant, which notes that the [G] prototype served as a test bed for incorporating shield technology with MJOLNIR PAA.
