Health dept.: Allegheny County confirms measles case with Target exposure

Pennsylvania reported 1,004 measles cases this year, crossing a grim milestone that ranks the current outbreak among the largest in the United States in decades, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. An unvaccinated minor under 18 years old in Allegheny County tested positive for the respiratory virus and is recovering at home, marking the first confirmed case involving an Allegheny County resident this year.

Target Exposure and Public Health Warnings in McCandless

County health officials identified a potential exposure site at the Target store located in the Pine Creek Shopping Center on McKnight Road in McCandless. Individuals who visited the store on Thursday, Oct. 1, between 3:45 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. may have been exposed to the virus.

Allison Arend, a Wexford resident who was at the McCandless Target during the exposure window, voiced frustration about the local risk. "Not happy. But I feel confident I’ve gotten enough vaccines," Arend said, adding that she felt confident despite the situation occurring at her local store.

Unvaccinated residents who believe they were exposed are advised to contact their healthcare provider, and officials stressed the importance of calling ahead before visiting any medical facility.

Pennsylvania outbreak tracks toward largest since 1990s

The statewide total reached 1,004 cases and five measles-related deaths, figures that place the outbreak on track to become the largest the country has seen since the 1990s, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health and The Inquirer. The current toll nearly surpasses an outbreak in South Carolina that sickened 997 people between last year and this year.

And it is finding unvaccinated individuals in many different communities around the state," Adalja said.

Local health departments also report significant hurdles in contact tracing. Dale Weiser, clinical services supervisor for Chester County’s health department, told The Inquirer that officials struggle to reach exposed individuals because people frequently hang up the phone or refuse to answer.

About two-thirds of measles cases in Pennsylvania have occurred among adults, and roughly 20% of cases required hospitalization, according to state data. Public health experts note that Pennsylvania allows exemptions for medical, philosophical, or religious reasons, which has contributed to declining vaccination rates in certain communities.

What are the symptoms and vaccine efficacy?

How effective is the MMR vaccine against infection?

The measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine offers strong protection. One dose is 93% effective against measles, while the recommended second dose increases that efficacy to 97%, providing lifelong immunity according to public health data cited by CNN.

Why are health officials advising people to call ahead before visiting a clinic?

Because measles is highly contagious and spreads through airborne particles that linger in rooms long after an infected person leaves, calling ahead allows medical facilities to prepare and prevent exposing other vulnerable patients in waiting areas.
