Leclerc and Hamilton Reflect on Strong China Sprint Performance

Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton both secured podium finishes in the China Sprint, challenging race winner George Russell in a thrilling competition. The Ferrari drivers expressed satisfaction with their performance and the potential demonstrated during the race.

Lewis Hamilton briefly took the lead on the first lap of the 19-lap Sprint, starting from fourth position. He engaged in a fierce duel with poleman George Russell throughout the opening laps. The seven-time World Champion then battled closely with his Ferrari teammate, Charles Leclerc, with both drivers pushing each other to the limit through the initial corners.

Leclerc’s Ascent and Wheel-to-Wheel Competition

Charles Leclerc, starting from sixth, gradually closed the gap and eventually overtook Hamilton on Lap 8 at Turn 1, securing second place. The two Ferrari drivers continued to battle intensely, exchanging positions multiple times over the following laps. Leclerc questioned Hamilton’s awareness of car width during their close encounters, expressing frustration over the limited space during the maneuvers.

Late Race Dynamics and Safety Car Impact

A late Safety Car period prompted the leading drivers to pit for fresh Pirelli tires. However, Leclerc experienced wheelspin exiting Turn 14 at the restart, hindering his ability to challenge Russell for the lead. Despite this, Leclerc remained within striking distance, finishing less than a second behind Russell.

Driver Reactions and Assessment

“I’m pretty happy with the race,” said Leclerc. “I think the pace was quite strong – we had a bit of fighting which made me lose time to George and then it was difficult to catch up. But it’s quality to see that at least our race pace is similar to Mercedes and our Qualifying pace. Pretty happy with the car today.”

Hamilton described the race as “one of the most enjoyable races I’ve had for a highly long time.”

Leclerc’s Radio Communication

During the intense battle with Hamilton, Leclerc voiced his concerns over the radio, stating, “Argh, the space! Does he know how wide these cars are, or not?” He later added, “That’s actually quite a fun battle.” His engineer responded positively to the comment, expressing enjoyment of the competition.

George Russell ultimately won the China Sprint, finishing ahead of Leclerc and Hamilton. The race saw Russell overtaken by both Hamilton and Leclerc at different points before regaining the lead and securing the victory.
