A new story in the world of Gilead is unfolding soon. Hulu will premiere “The Testaments” on April 8, a series based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, continuing the narrative established in “The Handmaid’s Tale.” The series serves as a dramatic coming-of-age story set within the totalitarian theocracy.
A Glimpse into Agnes’ World
The official trailer, released Thursday, introduces audiences to Agnes McKenzie, played by Chase Infiniti, the birth daughter of June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss). Agnes navigates life within an elite school for future wives overseen by Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd). The trailer offers a look at Agnes’ seemingly privileged upbringing, contrasting with the harsh realities of Gilead.
“I’m not really sure what year it was,” Infiniti as Agnes narrates in the trailer. “I grasp I still had my dollhouse — it looked just like our real house. Some dolls were always busy. Others were always doing the important work. There was a little girl doll — that’s me.”
Questioning Gilead’s Foundations
As Agnes reflects on her childhood, she begins to question the foundations of the society she’s been taught to accept. “Back then, we actually believed in this world. I guess it’s easier to accept a story than believe that the people around you are monsters,” she says as the trailer shows unsettling imagery.
A New Arrival and a Hidden Agenda
The trailer also introduces Daisy (Lucy Halliday), a newcomer from Canada who arrives with a mission to “save those girls.” Aunt Lydia tasks Agnes with helping Daisy adjust to life in Gilead, but the series hints at a growing sense of unease and a potential rebellion brewing beneath the surface.
