Despite Grand Theft Auto 6 arriving Nov. 19, 2026 as the expected biggest entertainment launch of all time, Rockstar Games has left much of the series’ 2D-era back catalog officially unavailable, Polygon reported, forcing players to hunt down retro hardware or pay $7.99 monthly for GTA Plus to reach the 3D classics.
While Rockstar prepares the next entry, the company maintains a spotty record of preserving access to earlier titles, particularly the top-down 2D games that predate the modern era.
GTA Plus covers the 3D and HD eras for $7.99 a month
Players subscribed to GTA Plus receive access to a rotating roster of classic Rockstar titles on the platform where they subscribe, plus mobile versions where applicable. The current lineup includes Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Grand Theft Auto Online. The subscription costs $7.99 per month and does not transfer between console and PC ecosystems.
The 2D universe games are officially abandonware
The original 1997 Grand Theft Auto, its two London expansions from 1999, and Grand Theft Auto 2 are not available through any official digital storefront. Rockstar removed the original GTA from its website in 2013 after offering it as a free download for years. Players must now source original copies for Game Boy Color, PlayStation, Dreamcast, or Windows PC, or obtain modified versions to run on modern systems. The PlayStation version of the original includes a hardcopy map, while the Game Boy Color port remains rudimentary.
3D universe remasters trade convenience for fidelity
Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas are widely available through the 2021 Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition on Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. However, Polygon reported that the Grove Street Games-developed remaster faced widespread criticism for technical issues and unfaithful visual upgrades. The 10 Year Anniversary Edition mobile ports from 2011 remain available on iOS and Android for a closer approximation of the originals, while original PlayStation 2 or Xbox copies deliver the most authentic experience. The Xbox 360 version of San Andreas is backward compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series X for owners who purchased it digitally or own the disc.
Handheld prequels split between mobile ports and dead platforms
Grand Theft Auto Advance, the 2004 Game Boy Advance prequel to GTA 3, exists only on original cartridges. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is easiest to play through its mid-2010s Android and iOS ports. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories never received a mobile port and requires a PlayStation Portable or PlayStation 2.
Questions players ask about GTA availability
Can I still download the original Grand Theft Auto for free? No. Rockstar removed the free download from its website in 2013, leaving the 1997 original available only through secondhand markets or abandonware archives.
Polygon reported that the 2021 remaster suffered from technical issues and visual upgrades that departed from the original games’ look, though patches have improved stability since launch.
Is there a mobile version of Vice City Stories? No. Unlike Liberty City Stories, the 2006 Vice City companion piece never received an Android or iOS port and remains locked to PSP and PS2 hardware.
GTA Plus costs $7.99 per month and includes the 3D universe titles, Chinatown Wars, Liberty City Stories, GTA 5, and GTA Online on the subscribed platform. With Grand Theft Auto 6 scheduled for Nov. 19, 2026, players seeking the complete series today must either pay the $7.99 monthly subscription for the modern-era titles or track down aging cartridges and discs for the 2D classics that Rockstar no longer sells.
