Hawaiian Electric Restores Power to Most Customers After Kona Low Storms

HONOLULU, March 24, 2026 – Hawaiian Electric has restored power to the vast majority of customers affected by the recent back-to-back Kona low storm systems. As of 4:30 p.m. Today, fewer than 1% of the company’s approximately 474,240 total customers remain without power, according to a company statement.

Crews are continuing to address safety concerns and restore power to the remaining impacted customers, particularly on the North Shore of Oahu. Hawaiian Electric has directly contacted approximately 135 customers in the Waialua area, advising them not to turn on their main circuit breakers until an electrician can confirm their electrical systems are safe to re-energize, due to potential submersion in floodwaters .

Current Outage Numbers (as of 4:30 p.m. March 24, 2026)

  • Oahu: Approximately 180 customers are without power, primarily in Waialua.
  • Maui County: About 40 customers remain without power as crews work on individual service lines.
  • Hawaii Island: Approximately 1,200 customers are without power, mainly in Puna and South Hilo.

Hawaiian Electric notes that outage numbers are dynamic and subject to change as restoration efforts continue and new outages occur . Customers can track current outages on the outage maps available at hawaiianelectric.com and the company’s mobile app.

Reporting Outages and Downed Power Lines

Customers are encouraged to report outages and any downed or low-hanging power lines to their island’s Trouble Line:

  • Oahu: 1-855-304-1212
  • Maui County: 1-855-304-8181
  • Hawaii Island: 1-855-304-9191

Earlier this month, Hawaiian Electric proactively shut off power to approximately 4,100 customers on the North Shore of Oahu due to catastrophic flooding from the second Kona low storm . This action was taken at the request of fire officials in Waialua due to flooding concerns. A similar power shutoff on the North Shore impacted the Board of Water Supply, leading to a precautionary boil water notice due to pressure loss in storage tanks .

Restoration efforts have been ongoing across all islands, with crews restoring power to 560 customers in Hawaiian Acres, Mountain View, Nanawale, and Volcano on Hawaii Island, and 64 customers in Maui County .
