£1 Billion Boost for UK Offshore Wind Supply Chain: Creating Thousands of Jobs

The UK’s offshore wind sector is set for a significant expansion with a £1 billion investment aimed at bolstering the domestic supply chain and creating thousands of high-quality jobs. The investment, announced at RenewableUK’s Global Offshore Wind conference in London, comes from the government, Great British Energy, the wind industry, and The Crown Estate.

Investment Breakdown and Key Programs

The investment comprises several key programs designed to address critical bottlenecks in the supply chain. A new £350 million Supply Chain Investment Programme, established by The Crown Estate, will focus on constructing new port infrastructure and facilities to support the accelerated delivery of UK offshore wind projects The Crown Estate. This builds on The Crown Estate’s existing £50 million Supply Chain Accelerator, which has already awarded nearly £5 million to 13 organizations as of December 2024 The Crown Estate.

The Crown Estate is investing up to £400 million in capital, drawing on new investment powers conferred by the Crown Estate Act 2025, which received Royal Assent in March The Crown Estate.

Addressing Supply Chain Constraints

Insufficient supply chain capacity has been identified as a major obstacle to further offshore wind deployment in the UK. This investment aims to alleviate these constraints by building essential infrastructure, including ports, manufacturing facilities, and research and testing centers. The goal is to enable the deployment of offshore wind across the UK and drive the clean energy transition The Crown Estate.

Government Initiatives and Targets

The British Energy Security Strategy (BESS), published in April 2022, set an ambition to achieve up to 50 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity by 2030, including 5 GW from innovative floating technology business.gov.uk. This ambition could support up to 90,000 direct and indirect jobs and requires approximately £100 billion in private investment to meet the UK’s net zero goal business.gov.uk.

Currently, the UK has 13.9 GW of offshore wind fully commissioned, a fourfold increase since 2012. There is a project pipeline of around 77 GW across 80 projects in construction, consented, in development, and planned for future seabed leasing auctions business.gov.uk.

The Offshore Wind Acceleration Taskforce, established by BESS, is focused on streamlining the consenting process, aiming to reduce the approval time for new offshore wind farms from four years to one business.gov.uk.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

The investment is projected to create an additional 10,000 jobs between now and 2035, providing a £25 billion boost to the UK economy RenewableUK. The focus will be on creating opportunities for manufacturing high-value goods such as turbine towers, blades, foundations, and cables, as well as providing jobs in the construction, operation, and maintenance of offshore wind farms RenewableUK.

Collaboration and Coordination

The Crown Estate will work in coordination with organizations from the private and public sectors, including Great British Energy and the National Wealth Fund, to ensure the investments are effective and impactful The Crown Estate. Industry members of the Offshore Wind Industry Council (OWIC) are also working to match government funding and drive long-term sector growth RenewableUK.
