WhatsApp to Finally Enable Scheduled Messaging Feature

After years of anticipation, Meta is finally rolling out a scheduled messaging feature for WhatsApp. The update, currently in testing, will allow users to compose messages and set a specific date and time for delivery, streamlining communication and enhancing convenience.

Delayed But Coming Soon

For a 16-year-vintage app, the absence of a scheduled messaging feature has been a notable omission. However, Meta is now actively addressing this, with a new “Scheduled Messages” menu item recently spotted in a TestFlight beta version of WhatsApp [Neowin]. While the feature isn’t yet available to all beta users, its presence in the test build signals an impending public release.

How Scheduled Messaging Will Perform

Once implemented, users will be able to write a message and select a future date and time for its delivery. Scheduled messages will be stored in a dedicated section within the chat window, and will be sent automatically at the designated time without requiring any further user interaction. Initial indications suggest the feature will first be available in group chats, with individual conversations likely to follow [Neowin].

Current Workarounds and Risks

Currently, WhatsApp users seeking to schedule messages have relied on workarounds. IOS users can leverage the Shortcuts app, while Android users have turned to third-party applications. However, these third-party solutions carry risks, as WhatsApp’s policies prohibit the use of unofficial tools, potentially leading to account suspension [Neowin].

iOS First, Other Platforms to Follow?

The scheduled messaging feature has, so far, only been observed in the iOS test build. It remains unclear whether the feature will be simultaneously released on Android and the web version of WhatsApp, or if iOS users will receive it first [Neowin].

Broader Updates to WhatsApp

The addition of scheduled messaging is part of a broader wave of updates to WhatsApp. Notably, WhatsApp is also introducing voice and video calling capabilities to its web app, a particularly welcome development for Linux users who currently lack an official WhatsApp desktop application [Neowin]. These updates demonstrate Meta’s continued investment in improving WhatsApp’s functionality without heavily relying on artificial intelligence features.
