Virginia Scholarships Aim to Address Healthcare Workforce Shortage
ROANOKE, Va. – As Virginia’s healthcare industry faces a critical workforce shortage, new scholarship opportunities are emerging to help students overcome the financial barriers to pursuing medical-related careers. The cost of healthcare education remains a significant challenge for many aspiring professionals, even with existing tuition assistance programs.
Chibuzor Iheoma, a student balancing his education with the responsibilities of raising three children, shared how a scholarship enabled him to continue his studies. “It helped me so much. That is why I was able to achieve this. And that is why I’m able to continue,” Iheoma said, emphasizing the motivational impact of the financial support.
Financial Barriers to Healthcare Education
Dr. Bill Hazel of Claude Moore Opportunities highlighted the precarious financial situation many students face. “They’re a flat tire away from not completing their education. Or they need to buy books. Or they secure sick and take… or a parent gets sick. So, these bits of funding that we’re able to provide, fortunately, able to provide, really help folks actually get to a certificate or to a degree,” Hazel explained. He noted that while schools offer tuition assistance, the often-overlooked out-of-pocket expenses can make education unaffordable.
Industry Demand and Scholarship Impact
The scholarships are strategically aimed at addressing a pressing industry need. Carilion Clinic currently has 2,000 job openings, and Cynthia Lawrence, Director of Workforce Development, anticipates further growth. “And that doesn’t consider the growth that we anticipate. So, we’ll need as many… We’ll need as many students to matriculate into the healthcare fields as we possibly can over the next five to seven years,” Lawrence stated.
