Waves in parts of the Riau Islands, especially Anambas and Natuna, are still quite high because the West Monsoon winds are still active…

Batam (ANTARA) – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Hang Nadim Batam Class I Meteorological Station reminded the public to be aware of the potential for high waves when the Ring Solar Eclipse phenomenon occurs on February 17 2026.

Head of the Hang Nadim Batam Class I Meteorological Station, Ramlan Djambak, confirmed in Batam, Friday, that this phenomenon could not be witnessed in Indonesia, especially the Riau Islands, but at that moment the wave conditions in the Riau Islands area were still quite high.

“Waves in parts of the Riau Islands, especially Anambas and Natuna, are still quite high because the West Monsoon is still active or the North Wind as it is called in Riau Islands,” said Ramlan.

According to him, the phenomenon of the Ring Solar Eclipse does not have a direct effect on the weather in the Riau Islands region. Eclipse periods, he said, occur periodically.

However, currently the weather conditions in Riau Islands have started to rain. This is different from the beginning of January to the beginning of February which lasts for 35 days without rain (HTH).

“The weather conditions in Riau Islands have started to rain partly, although it is still light rain,” he said. So, he continued, it is predicted that the Riau Islands’ weather in the month of Ramadhan will feel cool.

Meanwhile, for maritime weather, the wave height in Riau Islands during the 17 February period was still quite high, especially in the Anambas and Natuna areas.

“The wind speed which is quite high and has an impact on the height of sea waves has been going on several weeks ago and is still going on until February 17,” he said.

Sea transportation in the Riau Islands region, especially Anambas and Natuna, needs to be wary of. Fishermen and ship captains are advised to pay attention to weather conditions when sailing during this period.

The Ring Solar Eclipse is expected to occur on February 17 2026 and will only be witnessed by penguins, as it passes over West Antarctica, and along the Davis Sea Coast in the Southern Ocean.
