Indonesia Targets 14-16 Million International Tourists by 2025

The Indonesian government is aiming high for the tourism sector, setting a target of welcoming 14-16 million international tourists by 2025. This ambitious goal is backed by strategic initiatives focused on innovation, sustainability, and leveraging the Riau Islands as a key gateway for travelers.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ni Luh Puspa, expressed confidence in achieving this target. “I believe that from the beginning of this year until the end of 2025, we can achieve the target for international tourist arrivals,” she stated in a press release on January 2nd, 2023.

Innovation and Sustainable Tourism

Innovation will be a driving force in achieving this target. Puspa emphasizes that enhancing tourist attractions is essential to increase tourist stay duration and spending.

>“Enhanced attractions are expected to increase the length of stay for tourists and their spending,” added Puspa.

Sustainability is also a key focus. By creating new, sustainable destinations, Indonesia aims to promote responsible tourism while ensuring the long-term preservation of its natural and cultural heritage.

Riau Islands: A Rising Star in Indonesian Tourism

The Riau Islands, located strategically near Singapore and Malaysia, are slated to become a primary entry point for international tourists. The region boasts a diverse range of attractions, including nature-based experiences, cultural immersion opportunities, unique artificial attractions, and various sporting activities.

The Governor of Riau Islands, Ansar Ahmad, has commended the Ministry of Tourism’s efforts in supporting tourism development in the region.

> “Hopefully, this will help increase international tourist arrivals in the Riau Islands,” expressed Ahmad optimistically.

Visa-free and visa-on-arrival facilities are already in place, and the provincial government proposes further expanding these options to include holders of certain permits from Singapore (Employment Passes, S Passes, and Long Term Visit Passes). These initiatives aim to significantly boost tourist numbers to the Riau Islands.
