HIV Response in Eastern Europe and Central Asia Faces Critical Challenges
The HIV response in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) is at a critical juncture, facing escalating challenges including rising infection rates, declining funding, and the compounding effects of war, displacement, and economic hardship. Community-led initiatives are increasingly recognized as essential to reaching vulnerable populations and sustaining progress in the region.
Worsening Epidemic Trends
Since 2010, AIDS-related deaths in EECA have increased by 34%. Currently, only approximately half of individuals living with HIV are receiving treatment, and viral suppression rates stand at a concerning 42% – the lowest globally UNAIDS. A significant proportion of fresh HIV diagnoses are made at a late stage, increasing the risk of transmission and mortality.
Impact of Regional Instability
War, displacement, economic hardship, and migration are exacerbating the challenges to an effective HIV response. These pressures strain health systems and necessitate sustained, coordinated action. Access to essential HIV services remains fragile throughout the region.
Barriers to Access and Care
While antiretroviral therapy (ART) is officially free in most EECA countries, many individuals still face barriers to accessing it. Prevention services are also limited, with opioid agonist therapy and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) available to only a small fraction of those who necessitate them. Stigma, discrimination, and legal obstacles continue to hinder access to care and prevention for key populations.
The Importance of Community-Led Services
