HMD Global Navigates Post-Nokia Licensing Era
HMD Global, the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer, is transitioning away from its exclusive licensing agreement with Nokia, a deal set to expire this year. While initially successful in reviving the Nokia brand, HMD has been proactively preparing for this shift by launching devices under its own name, but faces challenges as demand weakens in several markets.
The Nokia Licensing Agreement and Early Success
Founded in December 2016, HMD Global secured an exclusive license to manufacture and market Nokia-branded mobile phones and tablets. This partnership leveraged Nokia’s established global brand recognition, allowing HMD to quickly gain a foothold in the competitive mobile market. The company released a notable seven new smartphones in the first half of 2018, a high volume even by today’s standards.
Diversification with the HMD Brand
Recognizing the impending expiration of the Nokia license, HMD began releasing mobile phones under its own brand name in 2023. Notable products include the HMD OffGrid, a pocket-sized device with satellite connectivity designed for remote communication and survival situations, showcased at CES 2025. HMD also collaborated with FC Barcelona, releasing co-branded smartphones like the Barça Fusion and a reimagined HMD Barça 3210, based on the classic Nokia 3210.
Market Challenges and Reduced Availability
Despite these efforts, HMD has experienced declining demand in several markets, leading to a withdrawal from some regions. Availability of HMD-branded devices in the Czech Republic, for example, is now limited to a few basic models. The company’s website also reflects this slowdown, with a significant decrease in blog posts and updates since late 2023.
Looking Ahead
The future of HMD Global remains uncertain as it navigates a market without the Nokia brand. The company’s ability to establish itself as a standalone mobile phone manufacturer will depend on its innovation, marketing strategies, and ability to capture consumer interest in a highly competitive landscape. The Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026, beginning March 2nd, will be a key event for HMD to showcase its future direction and new products.
