Hollister Girls Soccer: A Season of Success and Teamwork
The Hollister High School girls soccer team concluded a remarkable season, marked by a strong record, a sixth consecutive Central Coast Section (CCS) playoff berth, and a renewed focus on teamwork and player development. The Balers finished with an overall record of 13-5-1 and an 8-3-1 mark in the Pacific Coast Athletic League (PCAL) Gabilan Division, securing third place – their best league finish since the 2018-19 season.
A Latest Approach Yields Results
Under the guidance of Coach Amber Painter, the team implemented a possession-based offense emphasizing patience, passing, and strategic through balls. This tactical shift, combined with a blend of returning players and new talent, fostered a positive and collaborative environment. “It’s all about our relationships on and off the field,” said senior midfielder Zamaya Rivera. “We are close with teammates, and coaches. We win for each other.”
Playoff Run and Competitive Schedule
Hollister’s playoff journey saw a 2-1 victory over Gunn High School, followed by a narrow 2-1 defeat to Crystal Springs Uplands in the CCS Division I semifinals. Over the past six years, the Balers have compiled an impressive 11-5 record in postseason play.
The team faced a challenging schedule, including a loss to Aptos, the undefeated Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League champion, and two close losses to Salinas, the CCS Division II champions and CIF NorCal Division II champions who are currently competing for the CIF State Division II title. Despite these losses, Hollister managed to score two goals against Salinas, a team that conceded only nine goals throughout the entire season.
Key Players and Team Dynamics
Several players stood out during the season. Coach Painter highlighted the contributions of sophomore Sophia Williams and freshman Claire Lovejoy. Defensively, the team was anchored by the speed and communication between sophomore Mayah Arreola and senior Karen Alvarado-Castillo. Zamaya Rivera and Manaya Rivera led the offensive charge, supported by Samantha Alvarado-Castillo, Kylie Varnes, Ana Kaplansky, and Claire Lovejoy.
The team’s success was as well attributed to strong sister connections, with Zamaya Rivera and Karen Alvarado-Castillo providing leadership and stability. Zamaya Rivera, a four-year veteran, excelled in both scoring and assisting, while Karen Alvarado-Castillo anchored the defense.
Strong Defensive Performance
Hollister’s defense proved to be a significant strength, recording eight shutouts and allowing only 11 goals in 12 league games and 19 goals overall in 19 games. Goalkeeper Itzel Flores’ experience and game knowledge were crucial to the team’s defensive success.
Looking Ahead
The Hollister girls soccer team’s 2025-2026 season demonstrates a commitment to teamwork, strategic play, and player development. With a strong foundation and a dedicated coaching staff, the Balers are poised for continued success in the years to come. Claire Lovejoy has been added to the roster for the 2025-26 season.
