Fewer Than Half of Americans Went to Movie Theaters in 2025

As Conan O’Brien prepares to host the 98th Academy Awards on March 15th, a recent study reveals a continuing trend: fewer than half of Americans attended a movie in a theater in the past year. The findings raise questions about the future of the cinema experience as streaming services gain prominence.

Decline in Theater Attendance

A study conducted by the Pew Research Center in the summer of 2025, sampled 10,541 panelists, with a 94% response rate (9,916 respondents), showed that only a slight majority of Americans had seen a movie in a theater within the previous 12 months.

The study indicated a long-term decline in movie ticket sales. Since 2002, when over 1.2 billion tickets were sold in the U.S. And Canada, sales have dropped to 769.2 million in 2025. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a particularly sharp decline in 2020, with ticket sales plummeting to 231.6 million.

Demographic Differences

The Pew Research Center study highlighted demographic variations in moviegoing habits. While men (53%) and women (54%) reported similar rates of theater attendance, adults aged 18-29 were the most frequent moviegoers. Conversely, individuals over the age of 65 were the least likely to visit a movie theater, with only 39% having done so in the past year.

Rising Ticket Prices

The cost of a movie ticket has significantly increased over the past two decades. In 2002, the average ticket price was $5.81. As of March 2026, a Friday night showing of “Reminders of Him” at the Regal Gallery Place theater costs $16.95 before tax, while a 3D showing of “Hoppers” is priced at $22.25.

Consumer Habits

Recent interviews with individuals on the National Mall reflected the study’s findings. Many respondents struggled to recall their last movie theater experience. One woman remembered seeing “Wonka” a few Christmases prior, while a teenager recalled seeing “F1” last summer. Another respondent remembered seeing “Zootopia 2” during the Christmas season.

The Oscars and the Future of Cinema

Conan O’Brien will host the 98th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on March 15, 2026 [1]. The ceremony will include a tribute to the late filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner [1]. As the film industry navigates changing consumer habits and the rise of streaming, the Oscars remain a significant event for celebrating cinematic achievements.
