This week a Nintendo Switch 2 edition of the metroidvania Hollow Knight was released.
For the Switch 2 Edition of Hollow Knight, developer Team Cherry promises “higher resolution, improved frame rate and additional effects”, but is this really fundamentally noticeable?
Technical optimizations and free next-gen upgrade
The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is available for 14.99 euros, while the upgrade from the Switch to the Switch 2 version is free. The YouTube channel ElAnalistaDeBits has now taken a closer look at these two editions.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Hollow Knight runs in the dock at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. There’s also an option for 120 frames per second, with the resolution reduced to 1080p.
In handheld mode, Hollow Knight offers a resolution of 1080p on the Nintendo Switch 2 (720p on the Nintendo Switch in handheld mode) and runs at 120 frames per second.
The frame rate remains largely stable, even if you play it at 120 frames per second. But apart from that, can you identify any significant differences? Be that as it may, as a free upgrade for owners of the Switch version, this is definitely a nice boost.
Team Cherry had already revealed the Switch 2 upgrade for Hollow Knight in December 2025, without a date at the time. This week, an age rating for a Switch 2 version surfaced, fittingly on the same day as the Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase. The Switch 2 Edition was released on this day.
The sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, most recently won Game of the Year at the 2025 Steam Awards.
Hollow Knight originally released for PC in February 2017. It was released for Switch in June 2018 and for PS4 and Xbox One in September 2018.
