Honda’s Strategic Shift to 2026

Beginning with the 2026 season, Formula 1 will implement a major overhaul of its power unit regulations, focusing on increased electrical power and the use of 100% sustainable fuels. According to an official Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announcement, this regulatory shift served as the primary catalyst for the manufacturer’s formal return to the grid.

Honda’s Strategic Shift to 2026

While Honda currently provides technical support to Red Bull Racing and RB through HRC, the 2026 project marks a transition to a full-factory partnership. The agreement establishes a direct relationship with the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team, which will move away from its current Mercedes power unit supply to integrate Honda’s bespoke hybrid systems.

Operational Proximity at Silverstone

A critical component of this partnership is the establishment of HRC UK. By basing operations near the Silverstone Circuit—the historic home of the British Grand Prix—Honda aims to bridge the logistical gap between its Japanese engineering headquarters and the team’s campus.

"We have established HRC UK as a new company to carry out the maintenance and operational activities for the F1 power units," according to Koji Watanabe, President of Honda Racing Corporation. This proximity allows for real-time collaboration during race weekends and streamlined communication regarding power unit integration.

Technical Goals for the New Era

The 2026 regulations mandate a significant change in the power unit architecture. The internal combustion engine (ICE) will be paired with a more powerful electrical system, effectively increasing the output of the Energy Recovery System (ERS) to approximately 350kW.

2026 Honda and Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team New Partnership Launch Announcement
Feature 2026 Regulation Focus
Fuel 100% Carbon-neutral synthetic fuel
Power Split Near 50/50 split between ICE and Electrical
Sustainability Increased reliance on high-voltage battery technology

According to Aston Martin Aramco’s official project briefing, the partnership is designed to ensure the team has total control over the integration of the engine and chassis. This "works team" status is considered vital for competing with manufacturers like Ferrari and Mercedes, who design their chassis and power units under one roof.

What Happens Next

The 2025 season will serve as the final year of the current engine cycle. Following the conclusion of the 2025 campaign, Honda and Aston Martin will shift their focus to the track-testing phase of the 2026 power unit. Fans can expect to see the fruits of this collaboration when the new, sustainable-fuel-powered cars hit the track for pre-season testing in early 2026.
