Pura and Malala Fund: Scent as a Catalyst for Girls’ Education
In a unique partnership, fragrance company Pura is collaborating with Malala Fund to support girls’ education globally. The collaboration leverages the power of scent to raise awareness and funds for initiatives addressing barriers to education in Tanzania, Nigeria, Brazil, and Pakistan. This initiative highlights the importance of locally-led solutions and the impact of global support in empowering girls through education.
Addressing Systemic Barriers to Education
Across the globe, girls face significant obstacles to accessing and completing their education. These challenges include gender-based violence, child marriage, poverty, conflict, and discrimination. UNESCO reports that educated girls are more likely to delay marriage, raise healthier families, and contribute to more peaceful and resilient communities.
Local Initiatives in Action
Tanzania: MEDEA and the Power of Film
In Pwani, Tanzania, Media for Development and Advocacy (MEDEA), a Malala Fund partner, utilizes film and radio programs to address gender bias and promote girls’ education. Sheilla, the Communications and Partnership Lead for MEDEA, hosts film screenings and discussions to spark community conversations about the importance of girls’ education and challenge discriminatory beliefs. These initiatives aim to foster a supportive environment where girls can thrive and reach their full potential.
Brazil: Odara and Affirming Afro-Brazilian Girls
In Brazil, the organization Odara, also a Malala Fund partner, is working to combat racial discrimination that contributes to high dropout rates among Black, quilombola, and Indigenous girls. Through the “Ayomidê Odara” program, young girls receive mentorship and opportunities to develop their voices through social media and public speaking. This initiative empowers girls to rewrite the narrative surrounding their potential and pursue their dreams.
Nigeria: Centre for Girls’ Education and Safe Spaces
The Centre for Girls’ Education in Nigeria, founded by Mama Habiba and supported by Malala Fund and Pura, provides safe spaces for girls to learn literacy, numeracy, and reproductive health. These spaces also offer opportunities for girls to develop self-advocacy skills and negotiate their right to education with their families. Mama Habiba emphasizes that educating girls unlocks opportunities, boosts the economy, and creates a brighter future for the country.
The Pura x Malala Fund Collection
Pura’s partnership with Malala Fund extends beyond financial contributions. The Pura x Malala Fund Collection features fragrances inspired by the natural scents of Tanzania, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Brazil. Eight percent of net revenue from the collection is donated directly to Malala Fund. The fragrances are designed to connect people with the stories of girls and local leaders working to advance education globally.
A Commitment to Global Impact
By blending the power of scent with a commitment to social impact, Pura and Malala Fund are creating a unique platform for raising awareness and driving change. This partnership underscores the belief that supporting girls’ education is not only a moral imperative but also a catalyst for a more equitable and prosperous world.
