HSBC SVNS Hong Kong: Jorja Miller on Fire as Black Ferns Sevens Show Title Pedigree

The Recent Zealand women’s national rugby sevens team, known as the Black Ferns Sevens, are aiming for a historic four-peat at the HSBC SVNS World Championship in Hong Kong. Led by captain Risi Pouri-Lane, the squad is chasing a fourth consecutive title at the tournament, having won in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

According to the latest squad announcement, Jorja Miller is set to feature prominently for New Zealand in the upcoming competition. The Black Ferns began their 2025/26 campaign with Cup Final victory at the Dubai Sevens, followed by a loss in the final at SVNS Cape Town, before dominating the remainder of the season to secure the SVNS 1 title.

The team has compiled an impressive record, winning 527 of their 579 games across all competitions since 2000, as of March 16, 2026. Their accolades include two Rugby World Cup Sevens titles (2013, 2018), eight World Rugby Sevens Series championships, four Oceania Women’s Sevens Series titles, two Olympic gold medals, and one Commonwealth Games gold.

Risi Pouri-Lane continues in her role as captain, with Sarah Hirini holding the record for most appearances (277) and Tyla Nathan-Wong as the team’s top scorer (1,448 points). The Black Ferns Sevens are coached by Cory Sweeney and represent New Zealand in the World Rugby Sevens Series, Rugby World Cup Sevens, Olympic Games, and Commonwealth Games.

The HSBC SVNS World Championship in Hong Kong features teams from both the SVNS 1 and SVNS 2 competitions, including the United States women’s sevens squad. The event marks the beginning of the new-look World Championship Series following the conclusion of the SVNS Series regular season.

New Zealand’s pursuit of a fourth straight Hong Kong title underscores their sustained dominance in women’s rugby sevens, building on a legacy that began with victory in the inaugural 1997 Hong Kong Women’s Sevens tournament by the unofficial “New Zealand Wild Ducks” team.
