Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Reveals Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom Battles Thor and Chris Evans Returns as Captain America

Marvel Studios unveiled the first full-length trailer for Avengers: Doomsday at CinemaCon 2026, marking the highly anticipated return of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes after a six-year hiatus since Avengers: Endgame. The footage, presented by Disney to theater owners in Las Vegas, confirmed Robert Downey Jr.’s debut as Doctor Doom, Chris Evans’ return as Steve Rogers, and a major crossover event featuring the X-Men and Fantastic Four.

The trailer opens with Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, clad in his iconic green hood and metal mask, preparing to invade the multiverse. A key scene shows Doom catching Thor’s magical hammer Mjolnir bare-handed during their confrontation, signaling the villain’s overwhelming power. Earlier footage depicts Professor Patrick Stewart’s Xavier sensing danger from his X-Mansion as a bright flash illuminates the sky.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige stated that Doomsday picks up directly after the events of Endgame, expressing excitement about introducing the Avengers to the X-Men. The film brings back directors Anthony and Joe Russo, who helm the project from a script by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely. Joe Russo described Doom as “not simply a villain — he’s one of the most complex Marvel characters. He’s always three moves ahead.”

The most significant moment arrives when Chris Evans reprises his role as Steve Rogers, reuniting with Thor (Chris Hemsworth). The Asgardian expresses shock at seeing his longtime teammate, given that Rogers had traveled back in time to live out his life with Peggy Carter in Endgame before passing the Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson. Evans addressed the crowd, saying, “I couldn’t have imagined reuniting with this amazing team — let alone as a new character,” referencing his dual role in the film’s narrative.

Additional footage highlights crossover action, including Gambit (Channing Tatum) and Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) in battle, and Mystique (Rebecca Romijn) transforming into Yelena Belova, triggering a unique fight sequence between two versions of Florence Pugh’s character. The Russo brothers confirmed that the film advances the Multiverse Saga toward its conclusion.

Disney’s presentation at CinemaCon likewise featured updates on other major franchises, but Avengers: Doomsday stood out as the centerpiece, promising a multiversal threat that will require the combined forces of the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four to overcome.

The film is set for release in 2026, though an exact date has not yet been announced. Marvel continues to roll out selective teasers focusing on individual heroes, with the full trailer now serving as the definitive look at the upcoming crossover event.
