Humanity’s Shared Aesthetic: Study Reveals Alignment in Mating Call Preferences
New research suggests humans share surprisingly similar preferences for animal mating calls as the animals themselves, hinting at a deeper, evolutionarily conserved sense of beauty. A study published in the journal Science on March 19, 2026, found that human listeners consistently favored the same acoustic qualities in mating calls that the target species did, even without specialized knowledge of animal behavior or music.
The Allure of the Call
Animals employ a variety of strategies to attract mates—from vibrant displays of color to intricate dances. Sound plays a crucial role for many species, with specialized vocalizations signaling reproductive readiness. Researchers have long known that animals often prefer certain mating calls over others; for example, female túngara frogs show a preference for more complex courtship sounds from males. Interestingly, eavesdropping creatures like blood-sucking flies and fringe-lipped bats are also drawn to these complex calls.
The Experiment
Researchers, led by Logan James of McGill University, the University of Texas at Austin, and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, investigated whether humans might share these acoustic preferences. The study involved over 4,000 human participants worldwide who listened to 110 pairs of mating calls from 16 different species – amphibians, mammals, birds, and insects – and selected their preferred sound in each pair. The researchers already knew which calls were preferred by the animals themselves.
Striking Alignment
The results were “striking,” according to James. Humans were more likely than chance to select the same mating calls favored by the animals. The stronger an animal’s preference for a sound, the more likely humans were to choose it. Participants also responded more quickly when hearing the sounds animals preferred. Both humans and animals demonstrated a preference for calls with acoustic embellishments – trills, clicks, and chucks – and lower frequencies.
Beyond Expertise
The alignment held true even when accounting for factors like musical expertise and knowledge of animal sounds. Musicians and bird-watchers showed similar levels of agreement with animal preferences as non-expert participants. Surprisingly, the only significant predictor of agreement was the amount of time participants spent listening to music daily, a finding James believes warrants further investigation.
Evolutionary Roots?
Researchers hypothesize that shared preferences may stem from physiological similarities in how humans and other species detect and process sound. This suggests a common evolutionary basis for aesthetic appreciation. David Reby, a bioacoustics researcher at Jean Monnet University in France, who was not involved in the study, emphasized the need for further investigation into the underlying mechanisms driving these shared preferences.
Darwin’s Legacy
The findings echo observations made by Charles Darwin in 1871, who noted that animals “have nearly the same taste for the beautiful as we have.” The current research expands upon Darwin’s idea, suggesting a broader shared “taste for the beautiful” that extends beyond visual coloration to include acoustic qualities.
Looking Ahead
Future research will explore whether humans share similar sensory preferences with animals in other modalities, such as visual cues or smells. Scientists also aim to investigate brain activity in both humans and animals when exposed to preferred stimuli, and to understand the discrepancies observed in certain cases, such as with the mating calls of gelada monkeys. This research opens exciting avenues for understanding the evolutionary roots of aesthetic appreciation and the interconnectedness of sensory perception across species.
