Hawaii Doctor’s Attempted Murder Trial: Wife Testifies to Cliffside Attack
HONOLULU — One year after she says her husband attempted to kill her during a hike on Oahu, Arielle Konig testified in court on Tuesday, recounting a terrifying ordeal on the Pali Puka Trail. Her husband, anesthesiologist Gerhardt Konig, is on trial for attempted murder.
Arielle Konig, 37, a nuclear engineer, detailed the events of March 24, 2025, her birthday, when she and her husband traveled from Maui to Oahu. The couple had been attending therapy—both individually and as a couple—after Gerhardt Konig discovered “flirty” WhatsApp messages between Arielle Konig and a colleague in December 2024. Discovery of Messages and Attempts at Reconciliation
The messages between Arielle Konig and Jeffrey Miller, a senior director at TerraPower, were described as frequent and personal, unrelated to work. A code word, HALEU—an acronym for a type of nuclear fuel—was used to alert Miller when Gerhardt Konig was nearby. CBS News detailed this aspect of the case.
Following the discovery of the messages, Gerhardt Konig reportedly monitored his wife’s communications and demanded she cease contact with Miller. Arielle Konig refused to quit her job, and the couple began therapy, reading a book together titled “How to Help Your Spouse Heal from Your Affair.” She testified that she was committed to saving the marriage.
The Attack on the Pali Puka Trail
On the day of the alleged attack, Arielle Konig said her husband grabbed her forcefully by the upper arms and began pushing her toward the edge of a cliff. She threw herself to the ground, grabbing onto roots and shrubs to prevent falling. She testified that he then produced a syringe and attempted to inject her, but she knocked it away. According to Arielle Konig, her husband then struck her multiple times in the head with a rock, attempting to force her over the edge. She screamed, pleading with him to consider their children and family.
Defense Claims and Contested Evidence
Defense attorney Thomas Otake argued that Arielle Konig initiated the physical altercation, shoving her husband near the cliff edge and striking him with a rock. He claimed Gerhardt Konig only grabbed the rock after being hit and stopped the attack on his own accord. CBS News reported on the defense’s opening statements.
Otake also pointed out that no syringe was recovered at the scene, that Arielle Konig did not suffer skull fractures, and was discharged from the hospital the following morning. He further questioned Arielle Konig about an email she sent to her primary care physician requesting that traumatic brain injury or concussion be added to her diagnosis notes.
Financial and Legal Developments
Three days after the incident, Arielle Konig transferred approximately $123,000 from a joint bank account to a personal account and filed for divorce. She is seeking financial damages, custody of their two children, and ownership of the couple’s home. ABC News reported on these developments.
