World Snooker Championship to Remain at Crucible Until 2045, with Potential Extension to 2050
Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre will continue to host the World Snooker Championship until at least 2045, securing the future of the prestigious tournament at its historic home. The agreement between the World Snooker Tour (WST) and Sheffield City Council ends speculation that the event might relocate, with an option to extend the arrangement to 2050.
A Landmark Deal for Snooker and Sheffield
The long-term deal, announced on March 24, 2026, ensures that the World Championship will remain in Sheffield, where it has been held annually since 1977 . This decision follows concerns raised by WST chief Barry Hearn, who previously stated the venue’s 980-seat capacity was “no longer fit for purpose” .
Planned Redevelopment and Temporary Relocation
A planned £60 million redevelopment of the Crucible Theatre will potentially add an additional 500 seats, enhancing the venue’s capacity. However, this will necessitate a temporary relocation of the championship in 2029, and potentially 2030, although the work is carried out .
Global Interest and Local Impact
While alternative locations, including cities in China and Saudi Arabia, were considered, the agreement prioritizes maintaining the tournament’s legacy in Sheffield. Seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry emphasized the unique atmosphere of the Crucible, stating, “There is simply nowhere else like the Crucible or anywhere else that could replicate that atmosphere or the sense of history” .
The redevelopment will be funded through a combination of council and government investment, aiming to improve the theatre as a year-round venue. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted the importance of preserving the UK’s cultural and sporting heritage, stating, “We have a deep cultural and sporting heritage here in the UK — sport, art and culture are the very best of us” .
