Hwang Seo-hyun Claims Historic Balance Beam Gold at Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games
Breaking a Four-Decade Drought for South Korean Gymnastics
Hwang’s victory marks a significant milestone for South Korean women’s gymnastics. Her gold medal is the first for a South Korean on the balance beam since Seo Sun-ang won the event at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games, ending a 40-year wait. The performance also contributed to a historic multi-gold medal haul for the national team at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. On October 24, teammate Yeo Seo-jeong captured the gold medal in the vault—winning the title after 8 years—setting the stage for Hwang’s success on the following day and giving South Korea two gymnastics gold medals in a single Asian Games for the first time since 1986.

Viral Celebration and Coaching Staff Recognition
Standing at 1.36 meters and weighing 38.8 kilograms, Hwang drew widespread attention during the competition for her composure on the 10-centimeter-wide beam, where she executed triple rotations and aerial maneuvers. Footage of her post-competition celebration quickly circulated online as a viral video. Following confirmation of her victory, Hwang jumped up and tried to run onto the podium carrying a South Korean flag, only to be pulled back by coach Min A-young and trainer Park Hyo-jin out of concern for potential tournament penalties.

Ahead of her return flight on October 26, Hwang shared a message on her social media account expressing gratitude for her win at her first Asian Games. She credited her coaching staff, thanking coach Min A-young, coach Heo Young-seung for physical support, coach Choi Hoon-gyu, and trainer Park Hyo-jin for managing her mental focus. She also acknowledged the support of Yeo Seo-jeong, Lee Yun-seo, Shin Sol-yi, and Lim Su-min, thanking them for cheering from the stands and offering encouragement during difficult moments.
