Hyundai Invests $6.3 Billion in South Korea AI, Robotics, and Hydrogen Hub
Hyundai Motor Group has committed to a $6.3 billion investment to establish a cutting-edge innovation hub in South Korea, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and hydrogen energy. The agreement, worth nine trillion won, was finalized with the Korean government and Jeonbuk State, with construction slated to start later this year.
Strategic Location: Saemangeum
The hub will be strategically located in the Saemangeum area of Gunsan, a port city approximately 110 miles southwest of Seoul. Saemangeum is a 409-square-kilometer reclaimed land development area, offering significant space for large-scale industrial projects.
Key Investment Areas
Hyundai has outlined five core areas for investment within the hub:
AI Data Center ($4 Billion)
The largest portion of the investment, $4 billion, will be dedicated to building an AI data center. This facility will be crucial for processing the extensive data required for advancements in autonomous driving and robotics. The data center will feature 50,000 GPUs, storage for model learning and training, software-defined vehicle development capabilities, and the implementation of smart factory technologies. Construction is scheduled from 2027 to 2029.
Robotics Manufacturing Cluster ($277 Million)
A $277 million robotics manufacturing cluster will be established, aiming for an annual production capacity of 30,000 robots. This cluster will include a foundry operation plant, a component supply zone, and a Robot Application Center for robot training and verification. Hyundai showcased its robotics roadmap at CES 2026, including a production version of its MobED mobility robot.
Hydrogen Production ($694 Million)
Hyundai will invest $694 million in a Proton Exchange Membrane electrolyzer plant to produce clean hydrogen, aligning with the company’s broader commitment to hydrogen energy.
Solar Power Infrastructure ($902 Million)
The development of solar power infrastructure will receive $902 million in funding, supporting the energy demands of the data center and hydrogen production facilities.
AI/Hydrogen Smart City ($277 Million)
A $277 million investment will be allocated to developing an AI/hydrogen smart city, a concept previously showcased by Hyundai.
Broader Investment and Economic Impact
This initiative is part of Hyundai’s larger plan to invest $86.7 billion in South Korea through 2030. The company anticipates the project will generate 11 billion in economic impact and create approximately 71,000 jobs.
“What we’re building in Saemangeum will reshape not just a region, but Korea’s industrial future,” said Jaehoon Chang, vice chairman of Hyundai Motor Group’s automotive division. “Hyundai Motor Group brings together the manufacturing excellence, AI capabilities, and hydrogen energy expertise needed to establish a truly advanced industrial ecosystem.”
Future Outlook
Hyundai’s substantial investment underscores its commitment to becoming a leader in the future of mobility and sustainable energy. The Saemangeum innovation hub is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping South Korea’s industrial landscape and driving advancements in AI, robotics, and hydrogen technologies.
