Salin Dahel Ramos Alvarez Arrested at Nashville Airport

Federal immigration agents arrested a Venezuelan national, Salin Dahel Ramos Alvarez, outside Nashville International Airport on October 22, 2026, amid conflicting public accounts regarding his employment status and community concerns over surveillance technology. While social media videos initially claimed the suspect was working as a Lyft driver dropping off a passenger when detained, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials stated that the viral reports were inaccurate. The agency confirmed Ramos Alvarez admitted he was not a rideshare operator but had accepted payment from an acquaintance to drive them to the airport during a targeted enforcement operation.

Tren de Aragua Gang Member Status and Prior Removal Order

Immigration and Customs Enforcement designated Ramos Alvarez as a known or suspected member of Tren de Aragua, a violent Venezuelan gang linked to murder, human trafficking and drug trafficking. Federal immigration records show that Ramos Alvarez initially entered the United States on August 29, 2023, near El Paso, Texas, where U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents detained and subsequently released him. An immigration judge later ordered him removed from the country on November 28, 2023. Melvin Brown Jr., a retired Metro Nashville police officer, told fox17.com that the existence of that prior removal order legally validates the federal action. “If we’re gonna follow the law, we have no choice,” Brown said.

Flock Safety Camera Scrutiny and Community Transparency Questions

The October 22 operation triggered sharp debates among local advocates regarding transparency and the potential use of automated license plate readers. Yuri Cunza, president and CEO of the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, voiced apprehension on behalf of local residents. “I will say that community is concerned about things happening that appear not to make sense sometimes,” Cunza told fox17.com, noting that community members suspect officers relied on Flock Safety surveillance technology to locate the target. Cunza warned that such tactics could cause non-criminal immigrants to fear driving through the airport hub. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority confirmed that its Department of Public Safety utilizes the FLOCK system as a safety and protection measure for its 27 million passengers, but clarified that airport personnel do not run targeted immigration queries on behalf of federal agencies. Instead, external law enforcement entities nationwide access the shared database using search terms such as “immigration” or “immigration related activity.” Immigration and Customs Enforcement declined to confirm whether surveillance cameras played a role in locating Ramos Alvarez, citing operational security protocols.

Public Records Requests and Enforcement Expansion in Tennessee

To clarify how law enforcement databases are utilized in federal immigration enforcement, fox17.com filed a public records request with airport authorities to determine the frequency of searches conducted for federal agencies and whether the technology contributed to the October arrest. This enforcement action coincides with a broader expansion of immigration detentions across Tennessee since early 2025. Federal data indicates that immigration authorities carried out a six-week operation in the Nashville area starting in May 2025, resulting in 544 migrant arrests. In response to these rising enforcement partnerships with local police departments and sheriff’s offices, the agency decided to open two offices in Nashville, including a call center near the airport.
