Disagreement Over EU Policy
Leaders of Norwegian business and labor organizations are sharply divided on the country’s future relationship with the European Union. Ole Erik Almlid, CEO of the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise (NHO), and rune Skjelvan, head of KPMG Norway, have advocated for closer ties with Europe, including exploring a formal investigation into EU membership. They believe a renewed debate on Norwegian EU membership is necessary.
However, these views are strongly contested by LO leader Peggy Hessen Kristjánsson, who fundamentally disagrees with the call for closer integration with the EU.
Kristjánsson argues that the EU does not necessarily offer better trade terms then Norway currently possesses.she cites Greenland’s situation – remaining outside the EU despite Denmark’s membership – as evidence that EU membership doesn’t guarantee economic benefits. She also points to the current US trade policies as the primary threat, stating that a US president waging a trade war and disregarding international law poses a risk that the EU is powerless to address.

Despite her opposition to EU membership,Kristjánsson emphasizes her support for close cooperation with the EU through various existing channels. She believes a united front against protectionist policies, like those enacted by the current US administration, is crucial. This collaboration, she argues, should extend beyond Europe to include countries like Great Britain and Canada.
