IMSS Launches Blood Donation Drive Ahead of FIFA 2026 World Cup
The Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) has initiated a blood donation campaign to ensure adequate blood reserves ahead of the FIFA 2026 World Cup, which will see a surge in international visitors. The effort, led by the IMSS Blood Bank at Centro Médico Nacional La Raza, began with a mobile unit installation at the institution’s headquarters in Mexico City from June 3 to June 5.
Preparation for Global Event
The initiative aims to collect 50 or more blood donations daily during the mobile unit’s operation. Dr. Francisco Simbrón Juárez, head of the IMSS Blood Banks and Clinical Laboratories, emphasized the importance of public participation: “The best match of our lives is played by donating blood.” The campaign aligns with the World Blood Donor Day on June 14 and is part of broader preparations to handle potential medical emergencies during the tournament.
“With millions of visitors expected, we must be ready for any scenario,” Simbrón Juárez stated. “This includes having sufficient blood supplies for surgeries, transfusions, and emergencies in hospitals across the country.” The IMSS is coordinating with the National Blood Transfusion Center to organize similar drives in other regions.
Eligibility and Donation Guidelines
To donate blood, individuals must meet specific criteria:
- Be between 18 and 65 years old
- Weight over 50 kilograms
- Avoid fatty foods 24 hours prior
- Hydrate with juices, fruits (excluding bananas, mamey, and avocados), and tea or coffee four hours before donation
- Not have had illnesses like the flu, COVID-19 symptoms, or dental infections in the last 14 days
- Not have taken medication, undergone endodontic treatment, acupuncture, or had tattoos/piercings in the last four months
- Not have had surgery in the last six months

Donors can locate the nearest IMSS blood bank via the IMSS website or by calling 800 623 2323.
Importance of Altruistic Donations
Simbrón Juárez highlighted that blood is irreplaceable, noting its critical role in treating conditions such as cancer, obstetric hemorrhages, and complex surgeries. “Every donation saves lives,” he said. The IMSS encourages workers, residents, and the general public to contribute, framing the effort as a collective responsibility to support the nation during the global event.
The mobile unit’s launch in Mexico City marks the start of a national campaign to bolster blood reserves. As the FIFA 2026 World Cup approaches, the IMSS’s initiative underscores the intersection of public health and international sporting events, ensuring preparedness for both local and global needs.
