Buenos Aires Schools Face Closures, Sparking Protests

On Wednesday, School 1 of 15 organized a exhibition of solidarity, drawing participation from families and teachers across other schools.The event began with a protest at a traffic light in front of Plaza Echeverría,followed by a gathering at the school itself. Teachers from School 8 of 15,who had recently received similar news regarding grade closures,joined the call to action and invited further protests on Friday. The day concluded with musical performances from artists offering their support.

On Friday, the District 15 educational community reconvened, staging protests at two traffic lights – one at Alvarez thomas and Juramento, and another at Triumvirato and Juramento.Both locations saw critically important support from passing vehicles, buses, and local residents, many of whom waved and joined the demonstrations. A teacher from the school expressed frustration over the timing of the proclamation, which came just days before the end of the school year: “without giving us time to organize ourselves as a community and having passed the public events, restricting the possibility of teachers being placed in other schools, the families cannot understand anything either”.

Between Thursday and Friday, teachers at School 20 de 2, “La Rosarito,” learned of planned closures affecting five sections across both morning and afternoon shifts. In response, they reached out to the wider educational community and scheduled an open assembly for Monday, May 22nd, to discuss strategies for defending the public school and opposing the closures. The response from families has been strong, with widespread dissemination of data and a significant number confirming their attendance.
