In Latvia: Why Not Drinking is Still Questioned

challenging Latvia‘s Deep-Rooted Drinking Culture

In Latvia, abstaining from alcohol often elicits a questioning response,as highlighted by Ansis Klintsons: “A person who doesn’t drink is often still asked – what’s wrong with you?” This societal norm is precisely what Klintsons, alongside Agris Starts, the creator of the “1000 days clear” project, are actively working to challenge.

Their initiative aims to prompt a critical re-evaluation of alcohol’s role in Latvian society. Starts explains, “Alcohol is an almost non-negotiable norm for us – at events, holidays, even in everyday life. We simply invite you to ask the question: does it really give me what I think?”

The movement encourages individuals to consciously assess the perceived benefits of alcohol consumption adn consider whether those benefits outweigh potential drawbacks, ultimately fostering a more mindful approach to drinking within the culture.
