India Positions Itself as a Stabilizing Force Amid Global Economic Uncertainty

India is increasingly viewed as a stabilizing force in a world grappling with geopolitical shifts and economic volatility, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking at the Global Economic Cooperation (GEC) 2026 conference in Mumbai, Modi emphasized India’s role as a beacon of hope and a credible voice for the Global South.

India’s Economic Resilience and Global Leadership

Modi highlighted India’s unique ability to maintain high economic growth alongside low inflation, offering practical solutions to shared global challenges. He stated that India is the fastest-growing major economy and is actively shaping global conversations to promote a more balanced and inclusive world order . The Prime Minister also underscored the transformative impact of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), enabling transparent and accountable welfare delivery “at the click of a button.”

A World in Flux: Jaishankar’s Assessment

The optimistic outlook presented by Modi was tempered by a stark assessment from External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who described the current global landscape as “volatile and uncertain,” potentially the most turbulent in recent memory. Jaishankar warned that long-held assumptions are being challenged across strategic, political, economic, and technological domains .

He noted the emergence of concerning trends, including the “weaponisation of production, weaponisation of finance, leveraging of market shares and tightening of export controls,” signaling a shift towards a more fragmented and competitive global environment. Jaishankar stressed the necessity of de-risking and diversification, advocating for building national capabilities alongside trusted partnerships to ensure economic security.

Maharashtra’s Role in India’s Economic Rise

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis positioned the state as central to India’s strategic ambitions, highlighting its significant contribution to the national GDP (approximately 14-15%), industrial output (nearly 20%), and container traffic (over 60%) . Fadnavis characterized the current period as “the era of economic statecraft,” asserting that India’s rise is not accidental but structurally driven.

Shifting from Growth to a Trusted Partner

Industry leaders echoed the sentiment that the global business landscape is adapting to a more fractured and risk-conscious environment. Baba Kalyani, chairman and managing director of Bharat Forge, emphasized the need for stability, growth, and resources, positioning India as a prime destination for companies seeking to diversify supply chains .

The overarching message from the GEC 2026 conference was that as globalization evolves into calibrated interdependence, trust is becoming the most critical factor. India is actively presenting itself not only as a hub for economic growth but also as a reliable partner in an increasingly uncertain world.

India-France Strengthen Ties

Prime Minister Modi also welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron to Mumbai on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, for bilateral talks focused on strengthening India-France relations, particularly in defense and trade . Discussions included a fresh deal to acquire 114 Rafale jets from France, as well as potential agreements in skill development, healthcare, and supply chains. The two leaders jointly launched the India-France Year of Innovation, to be celebrated throughout 2026 .
