Marvel Comics Sets X-Men 92 Incursions Clash Between Animated Eras

The 1990s animated X-Men face off against the 2000s mutant teen heroes of X-Men: Evolution in X-Men ’92: Incursions #1. Scheduled for release on January 6, 2027, the one-shot is part of five Incursions one-shots that bring back the multiversal collision concept from the prelude to Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić’s 2015 Secret Wars event. Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost write the debut issue, featuring interior art by Salva Espin and cover art by Luciano Vecchio.

Creative Reunion for 90s and 2000s Mutant Teams

Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle reunite for the first time in 15 years to pen the multiversal battle. The creative duo previously worked together on X-Men: Evolution, where they co-wrote the episode introducing X-23, before launching their 2008 X-Force comic run. Salva Espin handles the interior illustrations after recently drawing the official prelude comic for Marvel Animation’s X-Men ’97. Luciano Vecchio designed covers A and B for the opening issue.

The plot forces the 1990s X-Men team to try and save their own reality by destroying another world in the path of the incursion. That opposing reality contains younger versions of themselves who still maintain hope for Xavier’s dream. Nerdist notes that the 2000s cartoon featured only Wolverine and Storm as adult heroes, while characters like Kitty Pryde never appeared in the 1990s animated series.

Creators Discuss Returning to Evolution Teens

Craig Kyle reflected on the long gap between collaborations and the significance of returning to the television characters. “Chris and I wrote our very first script together on X-Men: Evolution,” Kyle said, adding that the project changed their lives. “Returning to the Evo kids a quarter century later to tell the biggest story of their lives, in the pages of Marvel Comics, is a dream and an honor.”

Christopher Yost emphasized the personal milestone of revisiting his television roots. “It’s been gratifying to see so much love for the X-Men: Evolution kids, that show was my first job in the industry and was a dream come true,” Yost said.

Variant Covers and Additional Incursion One-Shots

Marvel offers variant covers for the debut issue by X-Men: Evolution character designer and director Steve E. Gordon alongside Marvel’s Stormbreaker artists Gurihiru. The single issue hits local comic book shops as part of a wider publishing initiative revisiting the Time Runs Out storyline across multiple titles featuring Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and the Avengers.
