India Eyes LPG Imports from Russia Amid Global Energy Concerns
New Delhi is actively seeking to diversify its energy sources, including exploring the possibility of importing Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from Russia, according to statements made by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday. This move comes as global energy supply chains face disruption due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Diversifying Energy Sources
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India is “trying to buy LPG from everywhere, wherever it’s available.” He specifically mentioned Russia as a potential supplier, adding, “If Russia is available, we’ll go there too.” Source This strategy aims to ensure the country can meet the fuel needs of its population amidst the current global energy crisis. Regional Energy Requests
The MEA also revealed that India has received requests for energy supplies from neighboring countries, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. India has been supplying diesel to Bangladesh since 2007 and continues to assist these and other South Asian nations, while also considering its own domestic requirements and refining capacity. Government Measures and Consumer Guidance
The Indian government has urged consumers to employ LPG judiciously and consider alternative cooking options. State governments are also increasing enforcement measures to prevent hoarding and black marketing of LPG cylinders. Alternate fuels like kerosene and coal are being utilized in sectors such as hospitality and restaurants to reduce pressure on LPG supplies. Source
Impact of Middle East Tensions
The move to diversify LPG sources is a response to escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. These tensions have disrupted global energy supply chains, impacting vessel movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for oil and LPG shipments. Source
