Indiana Bill Creates Pathway for Foreign-Trained Dentists to Become Hygienists

2026/01/29 08:10:50 – The Indiana House of Representatives approved House Bill 1254, establishing a route for internationally educated dentists to qualify for a dental hygienist license within the state. This legislation addresses a potential workforce gap and offers skilled professionals an opportunity to practice in Indiana.

Currently, individuals with dental degrees earned outside of the United States, equivalent to a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), face barriers to entering the dental hygiene field in Indiana. HB 1254 removes these obstacles by allowing these dentists to apply for a hygienist license. Applicants must submit official academic transcripts to the Indiana State Board of Dentistry for thorough evaluation. They will also need to fulfill all standard licensing requirements for dental hygienists in Indiana.

The bill successfully passed the House earlier this month and now awaits consideration in the Senate. If enacted,HB 1254 will take effect on July 1,2026. This new law could significantly impact the availability of dental hygiene services across Indiana, potentially improving access to care for residents.
