Indonesia Rejects Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland
Jakarta – The Indonesian government strongly rejects Israel’s claim to sovereignty over Somaliland, a separatist region of Somalia. Indonesia believes this recognition poses a serious threat to security in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
As reported on January 1, 2026, this rejection was formalized in a joint statement by foreign ministers from Indonesia and 21 other countries, along with the Organization of Islamic cooperation (OIC) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The statement was agreed upon on December 26, 2025.
“The recognition of Somaliland’s sovereignty has a serious impact on international peace and security and demonstrates a major violation of international law by Israel,” the joint statement read, as communicated by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on social media Wednesday evening, December 31st.
