Indonesia Investigates Green SM Following Deadly Train Collision

The Indonesian Transport Ministry has launched an investigative audit into electric taxi operator Green SM following a train collision near Jakarta on Monday, April 27, 2026, that resulted in at least 16 fatalities and numerous injuries. The investigation centers on whether a Green SM taxi played a role in the accident.

Details of the Collision

The collision occurred when a commuter line train and a long-distance Argo Bromo Anggrek service collided near East Bekasi Station. According to reports, a Green SM taxi was stopped at a railway crossing moments before the crash. A second commuter train was instructed to remain at East Bekasi Station, but a third train traveling from Jakarta to Surabaya crashed into the stationary train, causing significant damage, particularly to an all-female carriage.

Government Response and Investigation

Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi announced the investigative audit on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at East Bekasi Station. The audit will examine Green SM’s operational, technical, and human resource practices to ensure compliance with safety standards, and procedures. “We have begun an investigative audit of the green taxi company involved in yesterday’s accident, particularly at the pool where the vehicle was stationed,” Dudy stated.

Director General of Land Transport Aan Suhanan confirmed a surprise inspection of Green SM’s Bekasi pool was conducted on Tuesday night, followed by a direct inspection by the minister on Wednesday. The inspection focused on pre-trip vehicle checks, driver competency, health, administrative compliance, and fleet readiness.

Minister Purwagandhi warned that firm action would be taken if serious violations are discovered. “We ask for your patience. We will update the media on the audit results, and we will not hesitate to impose sanctions if serious violations are identified,” he said.

Green SM Indonesia, a local branch of Vietnam-based Green SM, confirmed the vehicle involved was part of its fleet and has pledged full cooperation with the authorities. Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), the train operator, will cover all medical expenses and burial costs for the victims of the collision.

A lawmaker has urged for the acceleration of double-tracking projects on the railway line to prevent similar incidents in the future. President Prabowo Subianto visited victims and ordered a comprehensive investigation, also pledging to build an overpass at the site and acknowledging maintenance gaps in parts of the rail network.

Ongoing Investigation

The National Transportation Safety Committee has dispatched investigators to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision, including how both trains ended up on the same track and why warning systems failed to prevent the crash.
