Elderly residents receiving in-home care in Saissac are set to benefit from a targeted oral health initiative. The Centre intercommunal d’action sociale (CIAS) de la Montagne Noire has launched a specialized training program to bridge the gap between daily living assistance and specialized clinical dental hygiene.
Breaking New Ground in Occitanie
Led by Dr. Aurélien Favaretto, a dentist based in Cuxac-Cabardès, the initiative stands as the second program of its kind in France and the first in the Occitanie region. Project organizers emphasize that it breaks national ground by directly integrating home care aides into clinical training alongside nursing assistants.
Curriculum Built on Regional Partnership
The curriculum spans seven hours, divided into two afternoon sessions. Established at the request of the ARS, the project operates in partnership with the Union française pour la santé bucco-dentaire des personnes âgées à domicile.
“At the request of the ARS, and in partnership with the Union française pour la santé bucco-dentaire des personnes âgées à domicile, we organize a training of seven hours with two teams that will accompany people in the framework of mixed care, associating care and support assistance,” Capdeville stated regarding the project’s scope.
Equipping Staff for Daily Intervention
Through this instruction, home care aides master practical assistance techniques alongside theoretical frameworks concerning oral pathologies. Ultimately, the coursework equips support staff to identify dental complications, use protocols provided by the physician, and contact a dentist when issues exceed a care worker’s defined scope of practice.
Hands-On Methods in Saissac
To ensure care workers build confidence for daily applications, Dr. Favaretto built the curriculum around active, hands-on participation. Around ten people attended the initial rollout session in Saissac, joined by Paul Griffe, vice-president of the community of communes and delegate for social actions.
“That is going to be a lot of practice. Everyone will have to participate,” Dr. Favaretto noted regarding the instructional design. “I have provided demonstration equipment to show the different intervention possibilities. We are going to train. The goal of the session is to be interactive.”
Elevating Regional Standards
By blending direct demonstrations with participatory exercises, the CIAS de la Montagne Noire intends to reinforce the skills of professionals working with elderly people at home and contribute to a better consideration of their oral health.
