Thorntons Receives €12.1 Million Insurance Payout After Fire at Dublin Facility
In December 2022, Thorntons Recycling, a major Irish waste management company, disclosed that it received a €12.1 million insurance payout following a significant fire at its Killeen Road facility in Dublin 12. The payout, detailed in the company’s financial reports, included €6.8 million for property damage and €5.3 million for business interruption, according to a report by RTE.
Financial Impact of the Fire
The fire, which occurred in January 2021, disrupted operations at the Ballyfermot facility, leading to a temporary shutdown. The facility reopened in November 2021 after “significant investment,” as stated in the company’s accounts. Despite the incident, Thorntons reported a 7% rise in annual revenue, reaching €92.28 million, with pre-tax profits increasing by 56% to €8.7 million.
Company Response and Future Plans
Thorntons’ directors, Shane and Paul Thornton, highlighted that the new Killeen Road plant, rebuilt after the fire, is “more efficient and sustainable” than the previous facility. The company attributed its financial resilience to growth in its domestic and skip hire business, as well as the 2021 acquisition of Rathcoole-based Skip Trans.
Context and Industry Implications
The insurance payout underscored the financial risks faced by industrial facilities, particularly in the waste management sector. Thorntons, which serves 70,000 customers daily, emphasized its commitment to improving recycling and recovery rates through modernized infrastructure. The incident also raised questions about the long-term viability of older facilities in high-risk areas.
