By scanning the 4.48 billion-year-old ‘Black Beauty‘ meteorite from Mars with new generation devices, scientists discovered high amounts of hydrogen and water components trapped in the rocks.

It was reported that Estrid Naver and her team from the Technical University of Denmark managed to image the inside of the Mars meteorite codenamed ‘Black Beauty’ (NWA 7034) without damaging it, using two advanced technologies called ‘X-ray CT’ and ‘Neutron CT’.

Small rock particles called ‘H-Fe-ox’ (hydrogen-rich iron oxyhydroxide) were found inside this stone, which is approximately 4.48 billion years old. It turned out that these small areas, which accounted for only 0.4 percent of the sample, contained 11 percent of the stone’s total water content. It was stated that this discovery proved that Mars has water that is much more common and probably in liquid form than was once thought.

Experts announced that they aim to use this non-contact scanning method on samples planned to be brought to Earth from Mars in the future.
