Germany and International Partners Unite Against Racism with Weeks of Awareness and Action

As the world observes the International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21st, Germany, alongside international organizations, is actively participating in and promoting the International Weeks Against Racism. These weeks, running from March 16th to March 29th, are dedicated to raising awareness, fostering education and challenging racial discrimination through a series of events and initiatives.

International Collaboration for a Common Cause

The International Weeks Against Racism are spearheaded by the European Coalition of Cities against Racism (ECCAR), in collaboration with UNESCO and the International Coalition of Cities against Racism (ICCAR). The ECCAR encourages cities to utilize provided logos and billboards, available in multiple languages including German, French, Swedish, English, Spanish, and Italian, as a visible demonstration of their commitment. UNESCO, ICCAR, and the City of Bordeaux have jointly created posters in French, English, and Spanish, which are available for download. Blank posters are also available, allowing cities to add their own messaging in their local languages. ECCAR and local organizations reiterate their joint commitment to combating racial discrimination.

Events Across Germany

Numerous events are taking place throughout Germany during the International Weeks Against Racism. In the Hochstift region, over 50 events are planned, including workshops, lectures, and readings. These initiatives aim to highlight the importance of diversity and peaceful coexistence. Specific events include a lecture on everyday racism in Brakel and a “colorful story time” for children in Höxter.

The Paderborn district is also hosting a range of activities, beginning with a panel discussion at the city library. An exhibition titled “Home is Diversity” is being held in Delbrück.

Germany’s Stance on the Global Stage

Germany’s commitment to fighting racism extends beyond its borders. As stated by Germany in Canada on Facebook, “We fight racism everywhere, every day.” Germany in Canada actively promotes the International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination, observed annually on March 21st.

Looking Ahead

The International Weeks Against Racism represent a sustained effort to address prejudice and injustice. Through collaborative initiatives and community engagement, organizations and cities are working to build a more inclusive and equitable future. Continued awareness and action are crucial in the ongoing fight against racism and discrimination.
