Apple iPhone 17e: Doubled Storage and MagSafe Debut

Apple on Monday unveiled the iPhone 17e, its latest budget-friendly smartphone, starting at $599. A key upgrade from its predecessor, the iPhone 16e, is the doubling of base storage to 256GB, a significant benefit for users given recent increases in memory costs driven by demand from the AI server market.

Increased Storage and Wireless Charging

The iPhone 17e now features 256GB of base storage, up from the 128GB offered in the iPhone 16e. This change is particularly noteworthy considering the rising prices of DDR memory, largely attributed to the expansion of AI server infrastructure. PhoneArena highlights this as a key improvement.

Beyond storage, the iPhone 17e introduces MagSafe compatibility and Qi2 wireless charging, enabling faster wireless charging speeds of up to 15W – a step up from the 7.5W Qi wireless charging supported by the iPhone 16e. MagSafe allows for easy attachment of chargers, stands, cases, wallets, and camera accessories, ensuring precise alignment.

Availability

Pre-orders for the iPhone 17e begin on Wednesday, March 4, with the device becoming available for purchase starting Wednesday, March 11.

Other Apple Announcements

Apple has teased a week of announcements, starting Monday, March 2, with potential updates to the MacBook Air and other products. CNET reports that Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted at “a big week ahead” on social media.

Rumors also suggest a possible OLED display for the next generation iPad mini, potentially positioning it as a competitor to dedicated e-readers like Kindle, and Kobo. Tom’s Guide explores this possibility.
