Apple’s iPhone 17e: A19 Chip, MagSafe Return and 256GB Base Storage
Apple has unveiled the iPhone 17e, positioning it as a more affordable option within the iPhone 17 lineup while introducing several key upgrades over its predecessor, the iPhone 16e. The new model features the A19 chip, the return of MagSafe connectivity, and doubles the base storage to 256GB, all at the same starting price as the previous generation’s base model.
A19 Chip and GPU Considerations
The iPhone 17e is powered by Apple’s A19 chip, promising enhanced performance. However, a slight difference exists in graphics processing capabilities compared to the standard iPhone 17. While the iPhone 17 boasts a 5-core GPU, the iPhone 17e is equipped with a 4-core GPU. Apple implemented a similar configuration with the iPad Air M4. Apple previously employed this strategy with the A18 chip in the iPhone 16e, offering a similar GPU limitation.
MagSafe Returns
Addressing a notable omission from the iPhone 16e, the iPhone 17e reintroduces MagSafe connectivity. This allows for seamless attachment of magnetic accessories and enables faster wireless charging, supporting up to 15W with a 20W adapter or higher, a significant improvement over the 7.5W wireless charging offered by the iPhone 16e. The device likewise supports faster wired charging, achieving up to 50% charge in approximately 30 minutes.
Increased Base Storage
Apple has doubled the base storage of the iPhone 17e to 256GB, providing users with more space for photos, videos, apps, and games, while maintaining the $599 starting price. A 512GB storage option is also available.
eSIM Expansion
Continuing a trend towards digital SIM technology, Apple is expanding the leverage of eSIMs. The iPhone 17e extends the “all-eSIM” policy, previously implemented in the United States for the iPhone 16e, to include Japan, Canada, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates. These markets will no longer receive iPhone 17e models with a physical SIM card slot.
Battery Life and Display
Battery capacity remains consistent with the previous model, with the iPhone 17e featuring a 4,005 mAh battery [MacRumors]. Apple reports that battery life will be comparable to the iPhone 16e. The device features a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display protected by Ceramic Shield 2, offering improved scratch resistance and reduced glare.
Camera Enhancements
The iPhone 17e introduces “next-generation portraits” with improved object detection. The device can automatically identify humans, dogs, and cats to record depth data during image capture. This allows users to transform existing photos into portraits with background blur or adjust the focus point after taking the picture.
Availability and Pricing
Pre-orders for the iPhone 17e begin on Wednesday, March 4, with availability starting on Wednesday, March 11. The iPhone 17e is available in black, white, and a new soft pink color, starting at $599 for the 256GB model. [Apple Newsroom]
