Escalating Middle East Conflict: Iranian Strikes Target Saudi Arabia, US Evacuates Embassy Staff

Tensions in the Middle East continue to rise as Iran launches further attacks, this time targeting Saudi Arabia. The strikes, which began in late February following American and Israeli strikes on Iran, have prompted the United States to order the evacuation of embassy staff from Saudi Arabia, signaling a significant escalation of the conflict.

Recent Iranian Attacks on Saudi Arabia

On Monday, Saudi Royal Air Defense forces intercepted three ballistic missiles and seven drones in the Kharj province, aimed at Prince Sultan Air Base. Additional attacks targeted Riyadh, where two drones were shot down and the Shaiba oil field, where seven drones were intercepted before reaching their target. Another drone was destroyed in the Jouf province.

Tragically, the attacks have resulted in casualties. Two people, one Indian and one Bangladeshi citizen, were killed after a missile struck residential buildings on the outskirts of Riyadh. Twelve other Bangladeshi citizens were injured in the same incident.

Background: Operation Epic Fury and Regional Tensions

The current conflict was initiated on February 28th with strikes by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets. Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks against Israel and US bases in the Persian Gulf region. A key event in the escalation was the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme spiritual leader, during “Operation Epic Fury.” His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been named as his successor, reportedly sustaining injuries in the same airstrike.

US Response and Regional Implications

The United States has responded to the escalating situation by ordering the evacuation of embassy staff from Saudi Arabia, as reported by Al Mayadeen English. This move underscores the growing concern over the safety of US personnel in the region.

The conflict highlights the existing sectarian divisions within the region, with Iran, a predominantly Shiite Muslim nation, often at odds with Sunni-majority countries like Saudi Arabia. Reports indicate Sunni scholars in southeastern Iran have declared jihad against Zionists, further complicating the geopolitical landscape.

Ongoing Israeli Strikes on Iran

Simultaneously, Israel continues to conduct airstrikes within Iran. The New York Times reported on Saturday that the Israeli military launched a broad wave of strikes against the Iranian capital, Tehran.
