Iran’s Security Chief Killed Amidst Escalating Middle East Conflict

The Middle East remains on high alert following the killing of Ali Larijani, Iran’s top security official, in an Israeli air strike. This event, occurring 19 days into the ongoing conflict, adds another layer of complexity to a volatile situation that has already seen significant escalation, including attacks on Lebanon and disruptions to international trade.

Key Leadership Losses and Regime Stability

Ali Larijani, head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was killed alongside his son, Morteza, and bodyguards. This follows the earlier assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, on February 28th, who has since been replaced by his son according to reports. Experts are questioning the stability of the Iranian regime in light of these losses.

Antoine Basbous, Director of the Arab Countries Observatory and partner at Forward Global, stated that “The regime is in difficulty, it has lost its leaders, its generals.” The replacement of Khamenei with his son raises concerns, as the fresh leader “does not have the same experience, does not have the same authority” .

Intelligence Penetration and Targeted Strikes

The success of these targeted strikes is attributed to deep intelligence penetration within the upper echelons of Iranian power. The Mossad and CIA have cultivated extensive networks of informants, facilitating the identification and elimination of key figures.

Despite these internal losses, the regime retains the capacity to cause harm, though it is significantly weakened.

Economic and Geopolitical Impacts

Iran has responded to the attacks by disrupting international trade through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil supplies. This action has caused a surge in oil prices, exceeding $100 a barrel. But, Iran appears increasingly isolated internationally. Russia benefits from higher hydrocarbon prices, while China, reliant on Iranian oil exports, remains hesitant to intervene.

Weakening of Hezbollah

Iran’s regional allies, particularly Hezbollah, are also facing challenges. Basbous notes that “Hezbollah is very weakened at the popular level and has become an agent of foreigners.” Lebanon attempted to curb Hezbollah’s influence following the death of its leader Hassan Nasrallah and the appointment of a new prime minister in early 2025, but Basbous laments that a “unique opportunity” for Lebanon to regain sovereignty was missed.

Just prior to his death, Ali Larijani warned the US and Israel that killing Iranian leaders would only strengthen the country.
