Urgent Recall of JAKO Sports Bags, Backpacks in Ireland Due to Cancer Risk
Consumers in Ireland have been warned to immediately stop using certain sports bags, personal bags, and backpacks manufactured by JAKO AG due to the presence of potentially carcinogenic chemicals. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) issued the urgent alert on February 27, 2026, following safety checks that revealed high levels of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) related substances in the products. Over 200 of the affected bags had been sold in Ireland as of the recall date.
What are PFOAs and Why are They a Concern?
Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a chemical substance that has been linked to several health concerns, including cancer. PFOAs are also considered a risk to the environment. The European Union has regulations limiting the use of PFOA due to these risks.
Which JAKO Products are Affected?
The recall applies to all variants of the following JAKO products, regardless of color, production date, or place of purchase:
- Toiletry Bag Challenge (Item number: 1721) – 10 units affected in Ireland
- Backpack Challenge (Item number: 1821) – 90 units affected in Ireland
- Sports Bag Challenge (Item number: 1921) – 116 units affected in Ireland
- Sports Bag Challenge with Bottom Compartment (Item number: 2021) – 3 units affected in Ireland
What Should Consumers Do?
The CCPC advises consumers who have purchased any of the affected products to stop using them immediately. JAKO is offering a free return label to customers who wish to return the bags for either a replacement item of at least equal value or a full refund of the purchase price via their original payment method.
JAKO’s Response
JAKO AG stated that the safety of its products is a top priority. The company initiated the recall as a precautionary measure after internal inspections revealed that the bags did not fully comply with its quality and safety standards. JAKO has assured customers that the returned items will be properly inspected and disposed of.
