Ireland Announces €250 Million Energy Support Package to Combat Rising Fuel Costs

The Irish government has unveiled a €250 million energy support package aimed at mitigating the impact of soaring fuel prices, driven by geopolitical instability in the Middle East. The measures, approved by cabinet and passed by the Dáil, include temporary reductions in excise duty on petrol and diesel, an extension of the fuel allowance season, and increased support for the haulage sector.

Excise Duty Cuts

From midnight on Wednesday, March 26, 2026, excise duty on petrol will be reduced by 15 cent per litre, while diesel will see a cut of 20 cent per litre. These reductions will remain in effect until May 31, 2026. In addition to the excise cuts, the National Oil Reserves Agency (NORA) levy will be reduced to zero next week, resulting in overall reductions of 17 cent and 22 cent on petrol and diesel, respectively. Support for Hauliers and Bus Operators

The haulage sector will benefit from both the excise duty cuts and an enhanced diesel rebate scheme. The rebate will increase from 7.5 cent to 12 cent per litre and will be backdated to January 1, 2026, remaining in place until the complete of June. BBC News

Fuel Allowance Extension

The fuel allowance season will be extended by four weeks, providing additional support of €38 per week, totaling €152, to approximately 470,000 households. BBC News

Government Urges Energy Conservation

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has encouraged citizens to examine their energy consumption habits and adopt measures to reduce usage. These include increased use of public transport, improved home energy efficiency, and consideration of reduced driving speeds. Martin noted that lowering speed limits can positively impact energy efficiency and stated the issue is “being kept under review.” RTÉ, BBC News

Retailer Compliance and Future Measures

The government expects retailers to pass on the excise duty cuts to consumers. Martin warned that failure to do so could influence decisions regarding the extension of the cuts beyond the end of May. He also ruled out the possibility of fuel rationing. RTÉ, BBC News

Political Response

The measures have drawn mixed reactions from political parties. Sinn Féin criticized the package as insufficient, proposing more substantial cuts and the removal of excise duty on home heating oil. The government defended its approach as “targeted and temporary,” emphasizing the need for proportionate and sustainable measures. RTÉ
