Irish Cancer Society Funds Counselling Services in Roscommon

The Roscommon Cancer Support Centre has received €12,000 from the Irish Cancer Society to provide free counselling sessions for individuals and families affected by cancer throughout County Roscommon. This funding will support approximately 200 counselling appointments in 2025.

Supporting Cancer Patients in Roscommon

Founded in 1993, Vita House offers a range of services including counselling and psychotherapy for individuals, couples, children and families. It also provides community education programs, workshops, and outreach initiatives. Since 2013, the Roscommon Cancer Support Centre has operated within Vita House, offering specialized support to those living with or recovering from cancer.

Comprehensive Support Services

In addition to the newly funded counselling sessions, the Roscommon Cancer Support Centre provides complementary therapies such as massage, reflexology, Reiki, and Indian head massage. The centre also hosts wellbeing activities including yoga, meditation, nutrition workshops, and programs designed to aid recovery and overall wellbeing.

The Importance of Counselling

Mary Quinn, Head of Service Operations at the Irish Cancer Society, emphasized the significant impact of a cancer diagnosis. “1 in 2 of us will receive a cancer diagnosis in our lifetime, and when we do, we deserve the best possible support to help us process and come to terms with our diagnosis. On top of the physical impact of cancer treatment, we know the emotional and psychological toll cancer can take on patients and their loved ones during and beyond their diagnosis.” Irish Cancer Society

Partnership and Fundraising

The Irish Cancer Society expressed its delight in partnering with the Roscommon Cancer Support Centre. Ms. Quinn also highlighted the importance of public support for the Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day fundraiser on Friday, March 20th. “We simply can’t be there for those patients and families without the generosity and support of the Irish public. Every €60 we can raise is a free counselling session for a patient or their loved one. Every euro of your support will help make a difference,” she stated.
