IRS Tax Pro Account Expands Capabilities for Tax Professionals
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced latest expansions to its Tax Pro Account, introducing digital capabilities for tax professionals working within companies, accounting firms and other organizations. These updates aim to improve efficiency in managing authorizations and reduce paper-based processes. IR-2026-22
What is Tax Pro Account?
Tax Pro Account is a self-service digital portal designed for tax professionals to manage authorized relationships with clients and access client tax information. Tax Tip 2023-118 It allows professionals to request Power of Attorney (POA) and Tax Information Authorization (TIA), view taxpayer information, and withdraw authorizations. New Business-Level Capabilities
The latest enhancements to Tax Pro Account allow designated business representatives to:
- Manage business Centralized Authorization File (CAF) access, specifying employee authorization levels.
- Link the business CAF number to the company’s Employer Identification Number (EIN).
- View taxpayer information associated with the business CAF, within the scope of active authorizations.
- View and withdraw active authorizations on behalf of the tax professional business.
Who Can Use Tax Pro Account?
Anyone can request TIA and view taxpayer information with Tax Pro Account. However, requesting POA requires authority to practice before the IRS as an attorney, certified public accountant, enrolled agent, enrolled actuary, or enrolled retirement plan agent. Requirements for Individual Taxpayers
For authorization requests to individuals, the following requirements must be met:
- The taxpayer must have an address in a U.S. State or the District of Columbia.
- The taxpayer address entered in Tax Pro Account must match IRS records. Taxpayers should check their online account or a recent IRS notice to confirm their address.
- Taxpayers who have changed their address should notify the IRS.
- The taxpayer must be able to access an IRS online account.
Hours of Service
Tax Pro Account is available:
- Monday: 6 a.m. Eastern time to Saturday: 9 p.m. Eastern time
- Sunday: 10 a.m. To midnight Eastern time (occasionally down for maintenance)
