Lebanon Becomes Target of Israeli Strikes Amidst Iran Conflict

Beirut – As the conflict with Iran continues, the Israeli military is now heavily attacking Lebanon. Thousands of people have been impacted by the Israeli strikes, escalating tensions in the region.

Hezbollah’s Response and Initial Attacks

Lebanon has been drawn into the wider Middle East conflict since March 2, when Hezbollah, the Iran-backed group, launched a rocket attack on Israel. Hezbollah stated this attack was in response to the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a joint United States-Israeli attack according to Al Jazeera.

Escalation of Israeli Response

Israel responded with extensive airstrikes against Lebanese territory, claiming to target Hezbollah positions. Tel Aviv too deployed ground troops to the Lebanese border area. NBC News reports ongoing clashes between Hezbollah fighters and Israeli military forces.

Casualty Reports and Humanitarian Impact

As of Wednesday, March 25, 2026, the Lebanese Ministry of Health reported at least 33 people had died and 90 others were injured in the last 24 hours as reported by Anadolu Agency and Middle East Monitor. This brings the total death toll to 1,072, with 2,966 injured.

On Tuesday, March 24, at least 17 people were killed and 20 injured due to Israeli air attacks and artillery fire targeting residential buildings and areas across Lebanon.

Recent Attacks and Infiltration Attempts

Another Israeli attack hit the Bashamoun area in the Aley district, Mount Lebanon, resulting in at least two deaths and five injuries. In Zefta town, Nabatieh district, an Israeli fighter jet destroyed a house, killing at least two people. Further airstrikes targeted Srifa, Haris, Rshaf, and Deir Antar in the Bint Jbeil district, as well as Touline in Marjayoun.

Israeli ground forces reportedly entered the town of Halta in the Arqoub area, raiding a house and killing at least one person, injuring several others, and kidnapping four individuals. Clashes erupted between Hezbollah fighters and Israeli forces in Qawzah, Bint Jbeil district, following an attempted infiltration.

Strikes on Southern Beirut

Since Monday, March 23, Israeli warplanes conducted seven airstrikes in the southern suburbs of Beirut, targeting areas including Burj al-Barajneh, Kafaat, Haret Hreik, Bir al-Abded, Jamous, and Hadath. Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee claimed these attacks targeted Hezbollah infrastructure.

Broader Context: Khamenei’s Killing and Regional Tensions

These events follow the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28, 2026, in an attack supported by the U.S. as reported by NPR. The death of Khamenei, who had ruled for 36 years, has significantly heightened tensions across the Middle East, prompting retaliatory actions and escalating conflicts.
